Our Geomagnetic Field Modeling services offer specialized consultation and advanced computational capabilities, particularly focusing on accurate calculation of geomagnetic induced currents (GIC) in power system transmission lines. Leveraging unique computational tools developed in-house, based on the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method, we provide precise modeling of geomagnetic fields and accurate calculations of GICs, to assess resilience of power systems against geomagnetic disturbances.
The Challenge of Geomagnetic Disturbances
Geomagnetic storms, resulting from solar activities like coronal (CMEs), pose significant risks to the operation of electrical power systems. These solar events can induce geomagnetic fields on Earth that generate GICs in power system transmission lines. These currents, though low in frequency, can severely impact the electrical grid by causing transformer saturation, increased reactive power consumption, voltage instability, and even widespread power outages.
